COVID 19 Credit/No-Credit Grade Option for Spring 2020

In order to support students due to the transition from in-person to online course delivery, a new Credit/No-Credit grade option has been created for undergraduate students.  The following grades are available in this grade mode:

“CC” – Credit for course equivalent to a C- or better

  • Student receives credit for the course.
  • Grade does not calculate into the GPA.
  • Grade satisfies major, minor, degree, and prerequisite requirements.

“CE" (formerly referred to as CD) – Credit for course equivalent to a D or D+

  • Student receives credit for the course.
  • Grade does not calculate into the GPA.
  • Will satisfy any requirement that a D or D+ would have usually satisfied.

“CN” – Equivalent to a failing grade (D- or F) in the course

  • No credit earned for course.
  • Grade does not calculate into the GPA.

Students may choose to remain in their current grade mode or switch to the new Credit/No-Credit grade mode on a course by course basis

A grade of a CC will satisfy all major, minor, degree, and prerequisite requirements.  A CD will satisfy any requirement that a D or D+ would have usually have satisfied.

**NOTE: this new credit/non-credit grade mode is not replacing P/F.  The P/F grade policy has not been altered.

Information for Students Considering Changing Grade Mode

  • Grade modes can be changed on a course by course basis later this term in the registration system between April 20 and May 6. No changes to grade mode will be permitted after May 6.
  • Before deciding to choose the credit/no-credit option, students should discuss the changes with their academic advisor to ensure there are no unforeseen consequences of switching to credit/no-credit, such as future application to graduate or professional schools.  Additional FAQ’s for students can be found here

Information for Faculty Considering the new Grade Mode

Keeping track of individual student grade modes can be difficult especially in large classes.  In order to reduce the amount of work on faculty members, faculty will enter a grade based on the original grade mode – for example, if a student had an A-F grade mode, the faculty member will enter the A-F grade the student earned.  The Office of the University Registrar will convert that grade to the Credit/No-Credit grade as referenced above if the student has changed their grade mode.  Faculty members do not need to keep track of which grade mode a student is on.  The one exception to this is if a student had previously selected a P/F grade mode prior to moving courses online.  In that instance, the faculty member would need to enter a P or F as usual.

Additional guidance will be provided to faculty members directly through email prior to grade entry opening.
