General Education Requirements: The University Core Curriculum

    Students admitted to the university with A.A., A.S., or A.A. & S. degrees from a Virginia community college or Richard Bland or who have been certified by the Virginia Community College System or Richard Bland College as completing the transfer module will be deemed to have completed the University Core Curriculum components.

    General education requirements for all other students must be satisfied through the University Core Curriculum. The core requirements a transfer student must fulfill are determined by the student's dean based upon the class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) into which a student falls at the time the student enters Virginia Tech.

The credit-hour requirements of the University Core Curriculum are as follows:
Writing and Discourse:
6 semester hours of Freshman English, depending on skill level
Ideas, Cultural Traditions and Values:
6 credit hours. Some colleges and departments require a 6-hour sequence.
Society and Human Behavior:
6 credit hours. Some colleges and departments require a 6-hour sequence.
Scientific Reasoning and Discovery:
8 credit hours. Some colleges and departments require an 8-hour sequence.
Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning:
6 credit hours. Some colleges and departments require a 6-hour sequence.
Creativity and Aesthetic Experience:
1-3 credit hours.
Critical Issues in a Global Context:
3 credit hours.
